BMI is a quick screen. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so pair it with waist size and how you feel.

How BMI is calculated

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
Imperial: BMI = 703 x weight (lb) / height (in)²

The WHO adult categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obesity (classes I to III). We also show the weight range that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not always. BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read as overweight while carrying little fat. Pair it with waist size and body composition.

What is a healthy BMI?

For adults, 18.5 to 24.9 is the normal range, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 and above is obesity. It is a population screen, not a diagnosis.

BMI vs body fat percentage?

Body fat percentage is more precise about composition, but harder to measure. BMI is a fast, free first look. This tool also shows your healthy weight range.

Does BMI work for everyone?

It is less reliable for athletes, older adults, pregnant people and some ethnic groups. Treat it as a screen and talk to a professional about your situation.
